Before Europeans arrived, the Kwakiutl bordered the Chicliset Nootka and the Comox Salish on Vancouver Island and the Hothmaco, Klahuse Salish, and Owikeno Salish.
The taking of slaves and the plundering of valuable items characterized the relations between the Kwakiutl and other tribes. For example, the Lekwitok Kwakiutl drove the Comox Salish southern reaches of the Johnstone strait.
Early contacts with Europeans started in the 1780’s when some fur traders and merchants came to the region. In 1786, James Strange led the first voyage into the region.
